For You
I want to fix
Dig in my bag of tricks
Fist fight like good friends do on playgrounds
I want to pull hair
Stick out my leg and trip who hurt you
I want to be childish
Roll my eyes
Suck my teeth
Shoot a look
That says
I wish you would speak
End with the only arm crossing
That would create wind storms of shade
Then turn on my heels
Give my back as if a wall of negro please as just been constructed in their dishonor
Only they aren't worth the energy, time or poetry
You are
I pretend strong
When I hear you say I can't go on
Fighting back tears of my own
To catch yours
I know you need this time
This moment
To own what you helped create
2
You were never a victim
You volunteered
Signed on the for the class
You needed the lesson
They were just the teacher
Look at you now
On the other side of
Going through
You grew through it
Found answers to questions
Mending in a bedroom with no music, television, or phone calls
Called on God, as if God could ever forget you
Never
So I will hold you until you can hold yourself
Speak life
Until you go Def
Like Poetry
You are special
Not just to me
To so many
This is for you
Hoping the that Sun finds
and Takes you to that same playground

and Smiles
Wide like this Summer may never end Smiles
This is For You
A prayer
In the shape of Poem
Heard in A Song
You may sometimes get lonely
You are never alone

First Love
You are not my first love
You are where I learned to put love first
The favorite part of a song
I hum to myself when my day goes wrong
You are the first time
I told the truth about lying
Hurt the first time I knew I was the reason you were crying
Found your heart to be the safest place in this world
The one thing, I can honestly say I worked for
Clowned around just for your smile’s approval
The day I found you
I knew I could never lose you
Even when good byes came
We were different but our love remained the same
Unharmed
In place and waiting
For you to pick up the phone and for me to let down my guard
It was hard
Loving you next me so far way
Us both being so athletic
You were a distance runner
I liked to sprint
Not sure who’s fault it is,
but we both ran
6
before the gun went off
Remembering
but not looking back
Compared so many to you
Came close a few times
Until I called them you
They, asked if I was still in love with you
Said, I was never out
Just different and unrepentant
I still feel like you are Heaven Sent
When I said, You are my first love
You are the place where I learned to put love first
You are My Soul’s Mate

Love, Maybe
My heart is quiet today
Mending from want and yesterdays
No longer looking or hoping
Standing still in the rain
Allowing it to be in this new place
At the window looking in
One days are songs and poems
Packed in suitcases placed in storage
Not sure when I will rid myself of them
But I know for sure they are going
So I do what my mother said she couldn’t do
What my father wasn’t around to do
I protect the little boy
Hold him close to myself
Catching every tear drop
Say prayers like lullabies in his ear
He falls off to sleep
Close the door
While he is resting
I write
Dream of stages
Movies
TV Shows
Friendships
Strong Drinks and Good Stories
I’m new here
Moving in and stretching out over the sofa
I’ve heard people talk about this place
Never thought I’d want to live here
But here is where I am
8
Where I once wrote songs
Held hope on the end of my sleeve
Believed in fairytales and magic
Then you grow up
Feel the wind against your face
Knowing the rain will soon come
This is real
I am ashamed that I have never known this thing
Seen in friendships
On the faces of strangers passing by
I hope it hard for my former flings
Who talked one days, but really mean now
I pray it for my nieces and nephews
Dream a time when even my mother will see her worth in it
Have my brother put down drugs and pick up his to
Knowing that I will always be at the window
Looking in
No longer hoping to get a taste
What I see looks good
But nothing I want is on the menu

Filling Daddy's Shoes
I wanted to feel your shoes
But you didn't leave any behind
Now I am afraid
Will my son be able to fill mine
We feed him dreams fork fulls at time
He is his own person
His face is mine
Maybe yours
He looks like you to me
I look you to me
To me we are looking at the same question
"Daddy, Pick me up?"
He reaches out and up
I’ve never known a love like this before
I want to be his hero
He is our lesson
Don’t want to get this wrong
At best I’m just guessing
Hoping I am man
To provide enough
Your eyes stare back at us
Unharmed by life’s disappointments
His smile moves me to manhood
Ask of me to give more
When quitting is just beyond the door
10
I leave for milk and bread
Return home with milk, bread and books
Read about him to him
Malcolm, Martin, Mandela, Obama and God
I am daddy and Father
Boy and man
Dreamer and Artist
Right and Wrong
I don’t know all the answers
I too question the world
We will do it together
Until he is on his own
Even then I will be more than a phone call
I’m committed to being my child’s support and not a check
We will listen to heartbeats and bury deadbeats
When his mirror is cracked I will be his reflection
If his dream is deferred, will ask, "let me be your redirection"
I am a son with a son without a Father
But I’m not a Fatherless Child
Loving you through the hurt and bruise
I will carry him for now
Until He can fill his own shoes
